When you phone, the breast pump hiring officer may ask if you’ve already discussed your situation with an ABA breastfeeding counsellor (the hiring officer may not be a breastfeeding counsellor). This is an important step in the hire process. Some mums who call to hire a pump may find that, after discussing their situation with a counsellor, they have some solutions to their breastfeeding situation and don’t need a pump.
On the other hand, some breastfeeding situations requiring pump hire are complex. You will benefit from information, options and support from a breastfeeding counsellor before hiring the pump. If the hiring officer is also a breastfeeding counsellor (and many are), she may provide counselling for you at the time you phone. If the officer isn’t a counsellor, they may suggest that you first phone the breastfeeding helpline. You may like to do that yourself before phoning for hire.
What happens when I hire a pump from ABA?
When you (or your partner) come to hire the pump, the breast pump hire officer will have an informal chat to ensure the pump is the right one for you. They will also demonstrate the pump assembly and operation and you’ll complete the required paperwork. You will receive information about expressing and storing your breastmilk.
Length of hire
Using a breast pump
A breast pump is not the same as the sucking action of a baby. If your baby is feeding well, they will be better at getting all the milk from your breasts. Because of this, expressing breastmilk may take a little longer than breastfeeding your baby.
Do I need a milk collection kit?
Yes, For hygiene reasons, you will also need to buy your own personal milk collection kit to use with the hired pump. The milk collection kit is those parts that come in contact with your breast and breastmilk, such as the breast shield (funnel) and milk collection bottle.
You can buy a milk collection kit where you hire the pump. The price of kits varies from time to time with exchange rates. Ask your breast pump hire officer for current prices.
You may have received a compatinle milk collection kit from hospital staff or a midwife, you should confirm these are suitable for long term use with the hospital staff or midwife.
Safety
All our pumps for hire are regularly tested and tagged and serviced according to state and territory regulations.
